The Third Annual Wash Ave Rocks! Street Fair: Celebrating the History and Future of Brooklyn's Washington Avenue on August 18

This summer, the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA) invites the community to celebrate the history and the future of Washington Avenue with the third annual WASH AVE ROCKS! Street Fair on August 18, 2012.
From noon until 6pm on Saturday, August 18, Washington Avenue will come alive between St. Marks Avenue and Prospect Place to showcase the neighborhood offerings of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, which have served as Brooklyn's cultural hub for generations. This year's street fair celebrates the essence of the Mom-and-Pop shop, from the neighborhood's pioneers to entrepreneurial newcomers.

The day will be jam-packed with a host of events and exciting entertainment for all ages to enjoy. Highlights from the day include:

A Food Taste-Off judged by food critics fromTime Out New York, Saveur Magazineand Edible Brooklyn; the appetizer contest winner will receive a trophy from New York City Council Member Letitia James and bragging rights (1pm)
A Fashion Show featuring local hair salons and clothing shops parading the runway (4:30pm)
The nationally acclaimed Double Dutch group the Stan's Pepper Steppers
A photo retrospective featuring images of the area through the decades

Throughout the day, vendors will highlight a host of flavorful foods and wares from the neighborhoods. Kids can enjoy a special treat with water slides, spinning apples, Mexican ice pops, and face painting. There will also be free snacks and school supplies donated and distributed by local merchants. Along with the Avenue's merchants, Heart of Brooklyn cultural institutions including Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and theBrooklyn Children's Museum will be on site with activities and giveaways for the crowd.

Taking place from June 1^st to June 3^rd, HOLY BOS! will give you a glimpse of local arts in all forms. From video installations, Architectural Video Mapping, live music, film screenings, a brunch by Secret Restaurant, and art performances, this sanctuary will offer a playground for the creative minds. For 2 days and 3 nights, you will be immersed in a true explosion of creativity, collaboration and inspiration.

The event starts on Friday June 1^st at 6pm and ends Sunday June 3^rd at 11:30pm. The Musical lineup includes Railbird, CREEP, Shiny Pieces, New Villager, Soft Spot, Caged Animals, Food Stamps, Kent Odessa and more TBA.

Chef Antonio Morichini brings the craft he refined at Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome to the first spring season at Bevacco, a new Italian restaurant in Brooklyn Heights.

Neighbors, tourists and-- as a recent spotting of actress Anne Hathaway demonstrates--celebrities are making their way to the corner of Cranberry and Henry Streets for Bevacco’s industrial-chic vibe and flavorful cooking.

Bevacco is the most ambitious venture of owners Peter Sclafani and Kristen Hallett, who designed the interior themselves. The husband and wife team also own Brooklyn’s Provini, Bar Toto and Bar Tano.

Chef Morichini’s spring menu reflects his experience at one-star Michelin rated restaurants Il Convivio Troiani, Glass Hostaria and Acquolina. All pastas and desserts are house made. Dishes such as Crema di Piselli e Capesante (warm green pea puree with scallops and lavender oil) and Tagliolini al Nero di Sepia (black ink pasta with shrimp, artichoke, mint and pecorino) evoke a spring night in Rome. Market-driven additions will grace the menu as spring moves into summer.

At the bar, edgy cocktails express a contemporary sensibility while a discerning list of Italian wines, beers, liquori and amari represent the traditional. Mixing muddled strawberries, white rum, elderflower liqueur, lime juice basil and cherry bark vanilla, manager and mixologist Loris Pignoletti’s Dolce Vita cocktail distills spring and the pleasure of Bevacco into a glass.

Yes Southpaw, the stalwart of Park Slope, is closing. The venue that once hosted Joan Jett and Patti Smith as well as Punderdome is being crowded by everything tot. According to The Brooklyn Paper, "I'm kind of over Park Slope. it's not a destination for nightlife anymore, said (Mikey) Palms, who also owns Public Assembly NYC in Williamsburg. It's time to go"

Southpaw is being replaced by New York City Kids, a kids tutoring and rock climbing company. (That sounds like a fun mix.) Owner Mikey Palms said Southpaw will close on February 20th.

"The Basques have invaded the 'burg! One of the newest flashy restaurants to surface in Williamsburg, Mercado on Kent, aims to bring the foods of Spain's Basque region to Brooklyn with an 80-seat restaurant that also happens to have a bar and a small marketplace and bakery. Fine by us, one really can never have too much Iberico jamon. NEVER.

The kitchen at Mercado is run by chef Peru Almandoz and boasts a menu ranging from small plates and salads to large plates and sandwiches. Everything is very sharable and the options (which you can check out below) range from $8 Iberico ham croquettes to a $26 sharable suckling pig with everything from crab toast ($7) and a $12 pork belly sandwich in between. All the breads (ranging from ciabatta to burger buns) are baked on site by baker Johnny Peralta, who did his time at Balthazar, and the cocktail program by David Olson seems interesting, too. You can see an early cocktail menu below.

As for the space? Its huge (6,000-square feet) and boasts the now-standard communal tables along with banquets, a chefs counter and a zinc-topped bar. Also lots and lots of reclaimed wood, marble and tile as is the style these days. Photographer Katie Sokoler adds, "They gave me some fresh bread from their bakery on the way out and it was amazing! Neeeeeed moooooore."

Strike up the band and get Marty (Markowitz) away from the food. This venerable institution continues to bring joy to a piece of this world where many times we see very little. Where all we ever see is the old being torn down, pushed aside to make room for the new, brighter & better (maybe); seeing Hinsch's return is a win for nostalgia.

Let's face it, at this time of year most of us are reflecting on our memories of the wonderful (usually) times and places we have been with our families. Walking hand in hand with your dad to pick up a new toy, getting your very first pet or being able to sit at the adult table for Thanksgiving dinner. Even sitting in the back seat of the car without a child seat, or even knowing what that darn strap was used for was always an adventure.

I think back about my childhood, reminiscing about the sights, sounds and smells of the holidays and realizing how things have changed. Granted, some of those innocent memories came about from my complete trust and dependence on my parents, however, much of it is the "improvements" that have been put in place to make our lives better.

Oh well, it warms my heart knowing that a little piece of my history remains so that I can pass at least one more great memory to my children. To keep it short, welcome back Hinsch.

Black Friday is here. Great! All the big box stores have forced their employees to come in at midnight on Thanksgiving, or worse. Toys-R-Us opened their stores at 9pm on Thursday. Happy Thanksgiving to their employees.

The best way to truly support local business is to buy at local businesses. AMEX is hosting their 2nd Annual Small Business Saturday, a day for people to support small business. They are providing a $25 credit on your bill when you register your card and spend at least $25 or more on that card at a small business.

Gwynnett St., which is on Graham Ave., is owned by Esca's former wine director Carl McCoy and backed up by his Executive Chef, Justin Hilbert of WD-50, launched today in Williamsburg.

Small plates include Walnut Soup, pears and sunchoke while the Large plates include Long Island Striped Bass, smoked oyster cream & savoy cabbage and Amish Chicken, served with sweet potato, turnips and dates.

McCoy ensures the beverages are in place. Beer selection is a line-up of ten taps with some locals and wines mainly from the Europe.

This is one of our favorite Halloween events. There is a great friendly vibe, trick or treating everywhere, performances in front of houses and seeing friends. Head to the Pratt-Clinton Hill Community Garden (corner of DeKalb and Hall) for the beginning of the parade at 5 pm. The Parade Route winds through the neighborhood. Maps to the most generous homes for trick or treating will be provided. Of course, there will be the fantastic performance at 313 Clinton Ave. This house goes above and beyond with some kind of theatrical performance for everyone to see. (Performances run every 30 minutes). Details: Start at Clinton Ave between Gates and Greene and walk up to Myrtle and you will see the great costumes as revelers walk through the blocked-off streets.
